An enhanced-color image of planetary nebula Abell 39 (real-color here). We call these types of nebulae (the remnants of recently exploded stars) “planetary nebulae” because they explode and expand at a fairly uniform rate, causing it to look like a giant planet. This is one of the most perfect planetary nebulae—and with a diameter of 6 light years it’s by any means the largest spherical object in our galaxy.
